[FILM PRODUCTION] Logo Research

For our short film opening, we need to create opening titles and logos. As part of this, we needed to create a design for our company, including name and logo. In order to create this, Callum and I decided to look at existing film companies, their name and their opening logos to help design our own.

COMPANY NAME
We started by looking at the name of film production companies, especially companies based mainly around thriller films. This includes companies like Syncopy Films, Legendary Pictures and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer.

One key feature to a company name we noticed is the prefix - most film companies have a prefix related in some way to film creation, such as Films, Pictures, Productions, Animations, and so on. One of the most commonly used prefixes is Pictures, used in company names such as Legendary Pictures, Warner Bros. Pictures and 1492 Pictures, to name a few.

The name of the company could also be named after the founders of the company. For example, Warner Bros. was founded by the Warner family, and Goldwyn Pictures was named after the founders Archibald Selwyn, Edgar Selwyn and Samuel Goldfish (Goldwyn Pictures later merged to create Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer).

Some film production companies are given a name with a meaning behind it. For example, Syncopy Films' name comes from the medical term for loss of consciousness, while Working Title Films is a play on the term "working title", a temporary name given to a product during development.

COMPANY LOGO
Companies may use a historical background to the logo for their film company. For example, Warner Bros. logo incorporates a shield with the letters WB on it, with a banner over the top. The shield resembles a family's coat of arms, which could reference the fact that the company Warner Bros. was founded by the Warner family. This design is used throughout all companies using the Warner Bros name.

A lot of logos have equal width and height, and a lot seem to incorporate a circular shape. This can help make them easier to place and use, such as in icons or on posters. This also makes them look neater. Below are a number of logos which follow a circular design.

CONCLUSION
To make a successful company identity, we can draw inspiration from other existing film companies. Our film name should have some meaning behind it, with a fitting suffix such as Productions, Films or Pictures. As for the logo, it should have a round design, with a unique design that could be linked to our company.
